Isaiah Túndé Ògúnjìmí (PhD)

Lecturer I

Isaiah Túndé Ògúnjìmí (PhD) is an art historian and teaches Art History at the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Ọbáfẹ ́mi Awólọ ́wọ ̀ University, Nigeria, and a postdoctoral research fellow with NRF/DST SARChI in Geopolitics and the Arts of Africa, Arts of Africa and the Global South research programme, at the Department of Fine Art, Rhodes University, South Africa. His research intẹrẹsts liẹ in pẹọplẹ’s pẹrcẹptions of art forms and their relevance to the built environment, with a particular focus on public art, African art and visual culture, and ecclesiastical art. Focusing on the socio-cultural significance of art in African contexts, his work sheds light on the symbolic language of motifs, patterns, and icons that underpin African cultural identity and worldview. Through a decolonial approach, coupled with indigenous knowledge (Yoruba proverbs), he employs a method of viewing art through multiple epistemic perspectives. His current rẹsẹarch intẹrrọgatẹs “African Art in thẹ Art ọf Churchẹs,” dẹlving dẹẹpẹr intọ thẹ fascinating intersection of art, faith, and cultural heritage.

He is a member of several professional organisations, including the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA), the Nigerian Field Society (NFS), the Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA), the Lagos Studies Association, Nigeria, and the Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA).
