Nanashaitu Àdùkẹ Umoru-Ọ̀kẹ́ is a Professor in the Department of Fine & Applied Arts at Ọbáfẹ́mi Awólọ́wọ̀ University Ilé-Ifẹ̀, Nigeria, specializing in ceramics and art history. My research focus has been on potters’ biographies, confined perceptions; modes of practice and stylistic approaches to pot making in Yoruba culture. My research work includes historical and socio-cultural relevance of Yoruba forms, symbols and imageries where interpretations and meanings are studied according to Yoruba philosophical thoughts. My academic commitment to the preservation of traditional Yoruba symbols, motifs, imageries, and forms yielded some publications amongst which are Meaning and Significance of Osun Symbols, The Relevance of Sculptural Creativity in Yoruba Pottery, Re-defining Wall Painting of the Yoruba Southwest for Cultural Tourism, and Local and Transnational Flow of African Images and Symbols. As an art historian who works on some aspects of Yoruba pottery and traditions, I was selected in 2019 to present and publish on Yoruba Pottery in the collection of His Royal Highness, Franz, Duke of Bavaria, which is being donated to Die Neue Sammlung-The Design Museum. I also enjoyed the RAW Writers Residency from 5 May to 5 September 2021. I have attended several conferences on art-related subjects both within and outside Nigeria. I am a member of ACASA, CAA, SNA, and CeRAN.
